Why Should You Listen To Me?

The summer I turned 7, my parents started a dairy farm and by the time I left for college I had learned more about hard work and responsibility than most folks learn in a lifetime.

After graduating, I tried multiple jobs but nothing fit until I joined the National Guard. The Army taught me how to fly Apache helicopters, and along the way I was trained as a maintenance test pilot, instructor pilot and eventually I became the unit’s aviation safety officer.

Most folks don’t know that military flight ops are more about risk management than actually flying. From day one of flight training and at every pre-mission briefing, aircrews focused almost entirely on finding ways things can go wrong on a flight and then setting procedures to mitigate disaster and accomplish the mission. I haven’t given a safety briefing in almost 10 years, but I still use the Army’s official risk management process to evaluate nearly everything I do. I enjoy analyzing situations, but I enjoy taking action even more. All the best analysis in the world does you no good without action.

I avoid a risk when I can. But when a risk is unavoidable, I am willing to change my approach to minimize risk and bad outcomes. This is the foundation on which I built my plans for retirement and the future of my family.

When it comes to real estate, we've had quite a range of experiences. We were landlords for years with multiple units. We've done fix and flips and bought and sold numerous properties. Through our long and arduous journey, we failed and succeeded many times.
